He got an academic award in biology last spring. The biology curriculum for him was adapted so he didn’t have to do the full lab write-ups the way the typical students were doing. I think some of the writing was scaled back, but he did take the same exams, took the same quizzes, and generally I think the assignments were just slightly altered. So, the content mastery was there, it was just kind of, the volume of the material was just dialed back quite a bit for him.2

STUDENT REFLECTION: It truly struck me when Punita said, “He’s just a regular kid. He just happens to have a disability.” While I always thought I should recognize a child as a person first before recognizing his or her disability, hearing this statement from a parent who used only a few of the 45 minutes she spoke about her son to discuss his disability diagnosis completely changed this for me. —Graduate student
